To mark International Women’s Day 2021, Justin and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau recorded a video during which they confirmed they are “not afraid” to be labelled as feminists.

The three-minute-long clip was shared on social media on March 8, in recognition of the day that celebrates the “social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.”

“Women and girls are changing the world every day,” begins Grégoire Trudeau.

“Indigenous women, trans women, women of every background, origin, sexual orientation or age, women with disabilities, women in every community here in Canada and around the world … we honour your power and your leadership,” she says.

She goes on to confirm that “as a couple and as parents,” the duo have made sure that their kids understand that nobody is more important than anybody else.

“Neither Justin nor I are afraid to label ourselves as feminists,” she says, as Trudeau notes there is more to be done for feminism in Canada going forward.

The PM goes on to acknowledge the toll COVID-19 has taken on women in particular, describing it as a “she-cession.”

The duo then talked about a “path forward,” which they refer to as a “Feminist Recovery.”

A formal statement from Trudeau shares more details about this plan, which aims to invest more money in child care and women-focused organizations and includes a task force that will “address issues of gender equality in the wake of the pandemic.”
