The First Place In Canada To Say Goodbye To 2020 Is Newfoundland & We're Jealous

They also get to have fireworks and parties.

It's been quite the year. As Canadians get ready to say "Goodbye 2020" once and for all, one province will actually get to start the New Year before anyone else.

Thanks to their unique, half-hour time difference from the rest of Atlantic Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador will be the first place in Canada to leave 2020.

8 p.m. Saint John's fireworks display tonight

When the clock strikes midnight out east, it will only be 11:30 p.m. in the Maritimes, 10:30 p.m. in Toronto and just 7:30 p.m. on the other side of the country in Vancouver, just to name a few.

To celebrate the start of another year the province has some COVID-19 friendly celebrations lined up.

The city of St. John's is putting on their regular fireworks show over Quidi Vidi lake but this year is asking locals to take in the lights from their car or if they are outside to wear a mask and stay apart from others.

With the province's low COVID-19 numbers, gatherings of 100 are permitted at organized public events (just 20 people for private parties) as long as distancing can be maintained.

That means a number of bars and restaurants are also planning celebrations, with all the necessary precautions in place.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among those happy to put 2020 in the past, putting out a very enthusiastic New Year's message for Canadians.
