A small Ontario town has become a battleground for anti-masker protestors and those who oppose them.

Aylmer, Ontario, a town with a population of 7,492, has been divided over the issue of wearing faces masks.

The situation arose this Monday after Mayor Mary French declared a state of emergency in anticipation of anti-mask demonstrations.

All I'm trying to do is make sure we have resources in place so that if there is a huge crowd of people, we can call on the provincial government so it's done safely. Mayor French

French, who told CBC that she'd received death threats over her order, declared a state of emergency over concerns about the conflict.

Now, it is being reported that two opposing protests are about to take place this weekend.

One side will be protesting against the use of face coverings, while the other will be rallying to keep face masks mandatory.

Narcity has reached out to the mayor's office for further comment but has yet to hear back.

Despite rising tensions, the anti-masker rally is reportedly being described by its organizer as a "peaceful" event.
