8 People Got Charged For Allegedly Shooting Fireworks Into Crowds At Woodbine Beach
Police say fireworks were also aimed at officers and their horses.
Fireworks seem to be an ongoing problem at this summer.
Eight individuals have been charged for allegedly shooting fireworks into crowds of beach-goers, as well as police officers and their horses, on Canada Day, according to a Toronto police news release.
A large group of people gathered at the beach between 9:30 and 9:50 p.m. on July 1, and officers were patrolling the beach in anticipation. It was around this time that individuals "armed with fireworks" began shooting them "into the crowds, as well as at officers and horses," police stated. One officer was even hit in the head, but was not injured.
Eight individuals, all of whom are between the ages of 12 and 20 years old, are facing common nuisance and weapons dangerous charges. A 17-year-old was also charged for possession of a prohibited device.
"It is not only illegal to set off fireworks in Toronto public parks and beaches but it is also extremely dangerous in crowds of people. Anyone caught doing so can be arrested and criminally charged," stated police, adding that this type of activity is "completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
Police were overwhelmed with calls about the , and many officers were called to deal with large gatherings, garbage fires and flying fireworks at the beach.
