Toronto Police Services were kept busy over the Victoria Day long weekend, between fielding an overwhelming amount of non-emergency calls about fireworks and responding to the commotion at Woodbine Beach.

In an emailed statement to Narcity, TPS Media Relations Manager Connie Osborne wrote that "a number of units were deployed to engage with the crowd" at Woodbine, where large groups of people were gathered and fireworks were being set off.

"At approximately 9pm on Sunday, May 23, officers monitoring large crowds at Woodbine Beach requested further assistance after fireworks were set off," wrote Osborne. "Reports from the scene stated garbage was also set on fire."

"On Monday, May 24, at approximately 2.30pm, officers attended Ashbridges Bay Park and Woodbine Beach for large crowds," that were apparently setting off fireworks.

"Due to safety concerns for those in attendance and the wider public, further units were deployed. This included Traffic Services and Parking Enforcement. One person was taken to hospital after being struck by a firework, while another person received medical attention after a firework hit their leg. Garbage was also reportedly set on fire."

Osborne wrote that several fires had to be extinguished, one arrest was made and several Highway Traffic Act charges were laid. Officers were able to disperse the crowd on both days.

Beaches-East York Councillor, Brad Bradford called out "infuriating" behaviour displayed at Woodbine Beach over the long weekend, specifically the amount of litter on the shoreline and surrounding parks.
