The snow and winter conditions in the GTA have been creating havoc on the roads and it seems it's also causing some questionable driving decisions.

On Tuesday, January 16, the Ontario Provincial Police tweeted a video showing a driver attempting to overtake a procession of snowplows on Highway 407.

"Drive responsibly and be prepared for changing road and weather conditions," OPP Highway Safety Division tweeted. "This driver was unable to adjust their driving and collided into the wall shutting down plowing operations."

In the video, a procession of snowplows is driving down the highway in all of the lanes in order to clear snow across the width of the highway. A car from behind the procession speeds up and attempts to pass the snowplows in the far right lane, which is where the majority of the snow is piled.

The driver then appears to be unable to control their driving and ends up stopped in front of one of the snow plows, parallel to the direction their car should be facing. This in turn causes all of the snow plows to stop driving, forcing everyone behind them to stop as well.

In 2023, an amendment was made to the Highway Traffic Act regarding drivers and snowplows.

"It is now illegal to pass snowplows working side by side on Ontario highways. Only pass a snowplow if the lane is completely clear of any part of the plow, including its blade," said OPP Sargeant Kerry Schmidt. "Offenders may face a fine ranging from $150 to $1,000."
