A fundraiser has exceeded its $20,000 goal in just two days for a 3-year-old girl who passed away after having breakfast with a friend.

Maurine Mirembe, the mother of little Bernice Nantanda Wamala, wrote on GoFundMe that Sunday, March 7 "may have been sunny for most, but for me it's the day my baby breathed her last."

"She woke up playful as usual, had breakfast and played with a friend. She quickly grew weak, vomiting...and by the time I rushed to get to her, she was barely breathing, and looking ashen," she continued.

"The doctors ran numerous tests and couldn't find out what was killing her. After multiple resuscitation attempts by the doctors, Bernice was taken off life support."

Mirembe told CP24 that Bernice had slept over at a friend's home, who lives in a different unit in their Scarborough apartment building. Mirembe said that the friend also became seriously ill.*

Bernice's death is now under investigation by the Office of The Chief Coroner and Toronto police, according to the outlet. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is also analyzing samples to see if a food product is to blame.
