The school is named after Benjamin Vaughan, a historical figure who has associations with slavery.

According to the statement, further information about the renaming process is still pending, but "Vaughan" has already been removed from the school sign.

"Community members have expressed feelings of hurt with the school name," stated the release.

“The name of a school should be supported by the local community and provide opportunities for students, parents and community members to be inspired to learn,” said Director of Education Louise Sirisko.

The region of Vaughan has also stated that they want to rename Benjamin Vaughan Day.
