Trump Is Still Banned From Facebook & Instagram But It May Not Be Forever

Facebook is set to review Trump's ban within six months.👇

Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram ban has been upheld by Facebook's Oversight Board, but that doesn't mean he won't return to social media in the future.

On Wednesday, May 5, the Oversight Board did not revert the ban on the former U.S. president's Facebook and Instagram accounts, but it did order Facebook (which also owns Instagram) to review its decision to permanently ban Trump from the platforms.

The board criticized the permanent nature of the ban and said the decision to suspend Trump long-term was "indeterminate and standardless," according to BBC News.

The Oversight Board, which is sometimes called "Facebook's Supreme Court" was created by Mark Zuckerberg to rule on moderation decisions made by Facebook. It is made up of academics and lawyers, as well as journalists and human rights activists.

It said the response of Facebook and Instagram should be "consistent with the rules that are applied to other users of its platform," noting that the same protocol that would be applied to any other ordinary user should also be applied to the former president.

Within six months, Facebook must review the decision and "justify a proportionate response," which could mean Trump's return to social media before 2021 is over.
