Vancouver has been soaking up some unusually dry and mild weather this month, but that's about to change. The weather forecast for the city is calling for a frigid turn of events going into the weekend.

If you've been loving the break from rainy days, enjoy it while it lasts. The Weather Network (TWN) said that coastal areas are expected to see rain later this week, while the mountains will get a fresh blanket of snow starting Thursday. And if conditions line up just right, some flakes could approach sea level this weekend.

The system moving in on Thursday is packing a punch, with forecasts calling for 30-50 mm of rain to the Lower Mainland and 30-50 cm of snow across the North Shore Mountains, falling into the weekend.

But it’s not just about precipitation—temperatures are set to take a deep dive. This could be the coldest air Vancouver has seen all season. While higher elevations are expected to see lots of snow, TWN warns that "the arrival of this colder pattern could make conditions favourable for snow to fall at lower elevations across the South Coast as we head into the month of February."

Don't get too attached to winter, though. TWN says a "drier pattern" could return late next week. That said, it's still possible "that systems will continue to impact the South Coast region, and even bring wintry threats as the season marches on."
