A Ship That Sank Off The BC Coast 52 Years Ago Is Leaking Fuel In The Water

In B.C., the decades-old Bligh Island shipwreck is now leaking fuel into the ocean.

On December 11, the Canadian Coast Gaurd tweeted that there is an investigation into marine pollution coming from the MV Schiedyk, which went down off the coast of Vancouver Island in 1968.

The Bligh Island Shipwreck Unified Command, which is the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and the Canadian Coast Guard, said in a statement that this is a fuel leak but there's no confirmation yet on what type it is.

The Canadian Coast Guard is working with B.C. Spill Response, Environment Canada, the area's First Nations and other partners to figure out the threat to the environment.

Back in 1968, The MV Schiedyk was carrying pulp and grain when it hit a ledge near Bligh Island and sank.

The Bligh Island Shipwreck Unified Command said that the hit caused a 100-metre gash in the ship.

Back then, it was reported that there was oil in the water.

It's in 109 to 121 metres of water on the east side of Bligh Island which is within the traditional territory of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation.
