Get ready to go "aww," because an orca mom in B.C. who's known around the world for her heart-breaking motherhood story is now celebrating.

Researchers say that Tahlequah, or J35, has a healthy calf now after making international headlines back in 2018 for what they called her "tour of grief" where she carried her calf who had died with her for 17 days.

Spotted near B.C. in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the calf called J57 was probably born on September 4 and was seen swimming well with its mom.

The team at the Centre for Whale Research is cautiously optimistic that this will end in a happy story.

But there is actually a 40% mortality rate for baby orcas like this, partly due to "nutritional stress," meaning whales not getting enough food or nutrients.
