If you want to start out the new year with a new gig, you may be in luck. VIA Rail is hiring all over Canada right now, and there are some high-paying jobs in Vancouver offering a unique career track.

There are jobs in various fields, from general workers to mechanics, with full benefits like dental and vacation days — plus high hourly wages. These VIA Rail jobs are perfect for those looking to switch things up in 2025, so here's a closer look at the Vancouver job openings they have right now.

Passenger Car Cleaner 

Salary: $32.39 per hour

The Role: There are two Passenger Car Cleaner positions that need to be filled in Vancouver. The role entails cleaning the interior and exterior of the passenger railway cars. This means vacuuming, wiping tables and chairs, cleaning the bathrooms, and washing the carpets on board.

It's a full-time position with shift work, so you'll need to be available for nights, evenings, or days as well as weekends and holidays. On top of the $32.39 hourly wage, you'll also get full benefits, which include dental, medical, a pension plan and a ride pass.

To qualify you'll need a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Railway car technician

Salary: $35.22 - $42.49 per hour

The Role: VIA Rail is also hiring for two positions in this role, to work at the Vancouver Maintenance Center. You'd be responsible for making sure the passenger cats are operating at peak capacity all year long by servicing them. This includes regular maintenance and repairs on various parts of the cars.

The role guarantees 40 hours a week, and the schedule might vary with overtime available. Since the center is open around the clock during the peak season you'll need to be available to work any day of the week.

You get full benefits with this job, including five personal days and vacations.

For this role VIA Rail is looking for someone with experience as a millwright, carpenter, plumber, welder, fabricator, or automotive technician.

Electrician

Salary: $42.49 per hour

The Role: This full-time role has two positions open, with 40 hours of work per week guaranteed. You'll need a Red Seal in Electricity, experience with troubleshooting and electrical equipment and be available to to work different shifts.

In this role, you would be performing electrical duties on passenger cars and locomotives. Electricians are responsible for equipment like heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting systems.

Diesel engine mechanic

Salary: $35.22 - $42.49 per hour

The Role: There are also two positions to be filled for this role, which is responsible for preventive maintenance and repairs on locomotives and rolling stock. The job posting says that the candidate will use their "skills to determine the causes of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic defects on fascinating locomotives and perform the repairs."

The diesel engine mechanic is also responsible for doing maintenance and inspections on the locomotives.

With this role you get 40 hours of work per week guaranteed and full benefits. To apply you'll need a vocational diploma in heavy-duty mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive mechanics., and a knowledge of air brakes.
