Canada has a new coin that's almost all black and features "maple leaves in motion."

The Royal Canadian Mint revealed that the $50 coin is special because it includes a combination of designs that have never been used on this kind of Canadian coin!

The 5 oz. Pure Silver Coin with Black Rhodium Plating — Maple Leaves in Motion has just been unveiled.

According to the Royal Canadian Mint, the Maple Leaves in Motion coin is a popular release each year but the 2024 coin is truly unique.

It's a 99.99% pure silver coin with both black rhodium plating and an incuse strike — an impression stamped on a coin — which has never been done on a five-ounce fine silver coin in Canada.

Since the silver maple leaf is struck incuse, it "radiates a brilliant shine that is amplified by the black rhodium-plated field," the Mint said.

If you look closely at the coin, you'll be able to spot laser-engraved maple leaves.

Those tiny maple leaves are easy to miss because the dark background changes the way the light reflects off the coin's surface.

There's an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse of the coin and not the king, even though the Mint has made new coins featuring a portrait of King Charles now that there's a new monarch.

Also, the obverse has a special marking that includes the years of her reign and four pearls to symbolize the four effigies of the queen that have been on Canadian coins.

Both the maple leaf on the coin's reverse and the effigy of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse are "struck incuse" to add depth and emphasize the highlights and shadows, the Royal Canadian Mint said.

There is a limited mintage of 2,000 new black coins.

You won't be able to find the $50 coins in your change though because they're not circulation coins. You have to pay to get your hands on this coinage.

Also, if you thought that it would cost $50 since that's the face value, it's actually much more expensive.

You can buy one of these new black coins online with the Mint for $649.95.

This new $50 coin is similar to a Canadian coin the Royal Canadian Mint released in December 2022 — the black toonie.

That black $2 coin honoured Queen Elizabeth II after her death and commemorated her 70-year reign as monarch.

It has the classic gold core like every toonie but instead of the silver outer ring, the $2 coin features a black outer ring. The black ring on the toonie is meant to be reminiscent of a mourning armband.
