Canada’s Ambassador To The US Says There's 'No Justification' To Reopen The Border

Canada’s Ambassador to the United States has revealed that the two countries have no immediate plans to reopen the Canada-U.S. border to non-essential travel.

Speaking to CTV on October 30, Kirsten Hillman explained that both Canada and the States are unlikely to ease any travel restrictions before 2021.

Hillman said there was “no justification” for such a move, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect both countries.

Hillman went on to explain that decisions about travel are made based on “the [COVID-19] facts on the ground,” which she says still advocate for a closed border.

Travel restrictions between the neighbouring countries have been in place since March, with the current restrictions scheduled to end on November 21.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have both been sending mixed messages about the border, with Trump suggesting on multiple occasions that travel should be restarted in the near future.

However, speaking candidly last month, the Canadian PM made it clear that decisions about Canada’s border would be “made here in Canada.”

Despite the mixed messages from the two leaders, Hillman said both countries are satisfied with the current travel measures that are in place.
