Shoppers should be aware of the latest Canadian beef recall, which was issued for specific products sold in Quebec that may have been contaminated with E. coli.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced on September 27 that Provigo brand ground beef sold at the 1 Boulevard du Plateau location in Gatineau had been recalled by JBS Food Canada.

The affected products were both medium and lean ground beef club packs with UPC codes starting with 0 213026 and 0 217334 (respectively) and best before dates of September 16, 17, or 18, 2020.

The CFIA notes that food contaminated with E. coli may not appear spoiled, but can still make you seriously ill.

Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, or mild to severe abdominal cramps, with more severe cases potentially leading to seizures or strokes, as well as the need for blood transfusions or kidney dialysis.

There have not been any reported cases of illness connected to the consumption of the affected beef.

The CFIA says to call your doctor if you think you may have become sick due to contaminated food and to throw away or return any affected products.

The agency is conducting a full food safety investigation, which they note may lead further recalls.
