CERB Ends Today But Only Some People Have To Apply For The New EI Program

EI payments start in October!
Senior Writer

Changes are a-coming. With the CERB ending, some people have to apply for the new EI program that's replacing it but others don't.

If you've been getting money from the CERB during the pandemic, it's time to say goodbye and get ready for a new benefit.

September 26 the last day of the CERB

Once the last day of the CERB is over, the revamped and simplified EI program will take over.

Only some people have to apply to start getting benefits if they're eligible and it all depends on where you got the money from before.

Canadians who got the CERB from the Canada Revenue Agency will have to apply through Service Canada after September 26 if they believe that they're entitled to get EI.

For anyone who got the CERB through Service Canada, they'll be automatically transitioned to EI once they've gotten all of the money they're entitled to through the benefit.

That's if they're eligible for the new program and still need income support.

Employment and Social Development Canada told iPolitics that Canadians will be eligible for their first EI payment on October 11 with almost everyone getting money by October 14.
