They were all voluntary, too!💰

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, thousands and thousands of Canadians have already made CESB and CERB repayments online.

In an email confirmation to Narcity, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed that over 900,000 voluntary payments had been received via the government’s “My Account” service.

The agency explained that there are multiple reasons why somebody may have decided to repay their COVID-19 benefits.

This includes if applicants applied in error for the CERB twice, if they later realized they weren’t eligible for the money or if they returned to work sooner than expected.

When it comes to other benefits dished-out by the CRA, repayments could be just around the corner.

The agency told Narcity that they will be taking steps to verify claimants are eligible for the benefits they may have received come tax time next year.

Those who turn out to be ineligible will be asked to pay the cash back.

The exact amount of money that has been returned so far has not been shared by the CRA.
