Cineplex Made 45 Movies By Black Creators Free To Stream In Canada

Hits like "Moonlight," "Us," and more.
Contributor

We might not be able to hit the movie theatre right now, but we're always looking to stream from home. You can now watch a ton of black films in Cineplex for free and there are so many incredible ones to choose from. The company said that they're giving them to Canadian audiences for free and covering the royalties themselves to inform people and to help elevate black creators.

In a Twitter post from Friday, June 5, the Canadian entertainment company said they're making a bunch of movies by black filmmakers for free on the Cineplex Store.

"In a time when many are turning to movies to become informed and empowered, we want to help," read a statement on the store.

"This collection of important films was curated to elevate Black stories, artists and filmmakers and spark discussion."

There's a ton of blockbuster hits in the list, including Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, Get Out, and Us. They've also got older classics like Remember The Titans and The Pursuit of Happiness.

All you need to do is make an account on their site and rent your film of choice for a grand total of $0. Cineplex told Narcity they currently don't have a set time frame for how long these will be available for free.

However, once you rent your film, it'll be available to watch in your library for the next two days.

Just because the films are free doesn't mean their creators are getting stiffed. Cineplex also confirmed in the comments of their original tweet that filmmakers will still get paid — "Cineplex is covering the royalty costs associated with the collection," they wrote.

Also, some of the movies featured have white directors on their roster but the plots are centred around black characters and their stories.

After the death of George Floyd in the U.S., a spotlight on police brutality and racism has been cast around the world.

As discussions around race continue in Canada, they've brought new attention to black-owned businesses and creators.

Other companies are starting to do what they can to help, too — Uber Eats is getting rid of delivery fees from black-owned restaurants, for example.

With everything that's happening around us, this is an amazing opportunity to learn more about other perspectives. How often will you get the chance to learn and experience amazing stories for free?
