Olympic gold medal-winning figure water, Patrick Chan, was there too! (We know, it sounds made up).

Early in November, a group of NHLers from the Vancouver Canucks hopped in helicopters to play a game of shinny 6,000 feet above sea level.

Elias Pettersson, Thatcher Demko, Alex Edler, and Zack MacEwen were there along with former Canucks Troy Stecher and Jason Garrison. Oh, and famous figure skater, Patrick Chan, was obviously there too.

The New York Times captured the dreamy experience in an enchanting photo essay. According to the Times, the whole thing was the idea of a local helicopter pilot named Bradley Friesen.

Basically, at the top of a mountain just outside of Vancouver, there are huge blocks of ice that have floated to the top of the glacier water.

When the water froze, the icebergs stayed at the top, jutting out from the shining surface. Friesen thought it looked magnificent and spent days preparing a makeshift hockey rink for the boys.

They played a game of shinny with a single net, red team versus blue team.

The players shared videos and photos on Instagram.

Elias Pettersson of the Canucks told the New York Times that he wouldn’t have been able to do this if this hockey season was on like usual. A bit of a silver lining to a difficult year.
