Seventeen members of the U.S. Congress have signed a formal letter to Vice President Mike Pence asking him to remove incumbent President Donald Trump from office.

The letter follows an unprecedented day of violent protests on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol that forced members of Congress to evacuate the building and reportedly left 4 people dead.

The letter urges: “For the sake of our democracy, we emphatically urge you to invoke the 25th Amendment and begin the process of removing President Trump from power.”

The 25th Amendment allows for a President to be removed from office if he is unable to "discharge the powers and duties of his office".

The request comes 13 days before Trump’s last day in office and Inauguration Day for President-elect Joe Biden on January 20th.

Congress members shared their thoughts publicly on Twitter, explaining the need for such measures to be taken.

As of Thursday morning, Pence has not responded to the letter.
