A Feng Shui Expert Is Revealing How You Should Arrange Your Home Office

"Approaching work as art can make a big difference."

With a majority of Ontarians now working from home, many of us are setting up makeshift offices.

However, Feng Shui Master Dana Claudat, from The Tao of Dana, a feng shui design blog, states that there are a number of steps you can take to help transform your space into one of productivity and inspiration.

Where should I put my desk when decorating my office?

In an interview with Narcity, Claudat revealed that the placement of the desk shouldn't matter as long as you feel at ease.

However, there are some tips you can follow to make sure you feel comfortable and settled in your new workplace.

"I’m not as concerned about what area of a room you are in as I am that you don’t have glare in your eyes from windows, constant visual distractions or a feeling of being sort of crammed in someplace," she stated.

She also states that splurging on an ergonomic desk chair is a must.

While Claudat does recommend standing when possible, having a seat that is supportive will change the game.

What can I do to make sure my space fuels productivity and inspiration?

Claudat states that there are a number of easy steps that you can take to make sure your office is a place of inspiration.

Always make sure to declutter and clear your space. This means even making sure your computer is digitally organized.

You should also make sure to clean your space every day, including wiping down the entire desk, to help create a fresh start to the next day.

"Bring games (puzzles, chess, other fun things) into your workspace to rev up the energy," she also recommends.

On top of that, you should also make sure to do some "energy clearing" daily.

"You can: diffuse essential oils, light a candle for a bit, clap in the corners of the room or even just open windows for a few minutes to activate the space," Claudat concludes.

What should I avoid when decorating?

Free-standing shelves on walls are something you should try to avoid while creating your next office space

"They often loom high on the walls and sort of hover over the space and don’t provide great storage overall," Claudat warns.

Instead, reach for a file cabinet or chest of drawers if you're looking for more storage space.

Claudat also warns that working in your dining space can become uncomfortable as well.

"Lots of my clients used to work at the dining table because they set up their space to try to meet Feng Shui “rules” and it’s terribly uncomfortable which is the opposite of the effect we’re after."
