Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have issued a food recall warning for fresh cut fruit sold at Loblaw banner stores.

According to the CFIA, the recall is due to possible salmonella contamination in certain cantaloupe products.

The affected products were sold at:

  • Loblaws, Superstore, Zehrs, Valu-Mart, Fortinos, Your Independent Grocer in Ontario
  • Provigo in Quebec
  • Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, Your Independent Grocer in Atlantic Canada
  • Superstore, Your Independent Grocer, Extra Foods in Western Canada
The full list of recalled cantaloupe and fruit platters can be found here and were sold in October and November, so if you bought fruit at that time and froze it, you'll want to double-check your products.

"Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick," warns the CFIA. "Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis."

In terms of what you should do, the government agency has the following advice:

  • If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider
  • Check to see if you have recalled products
  • Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products
  • Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased
The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently investigating an outbreak of salmonella in the country linked to contaminated fruit which is likely the cause of multiple deaths.
