While Boxing Day is known as a time for shopping sales, there's a lot more that people do on the holiday.

So, you might be wondering what grocery stores, attractions, government services and malls are open and closed.

If you don't know, Boxing Day is on December 26 — the day after Christmas — each year which is a Tuesday in 2023.

Also, Boxing Day is a stat holiday in Ontario which means most people are off work and a lot of places are closed but quite a few places are open.

Whether you need to go grocery shopping at Costco, take the TTC to visit family, shop for deals at the Eaton Centre, pick up a bottle of wine at the LCBO for a dinner party, or do something else, here's what's open and closed across Ontario for Boxing Day in 2023.

Grocery stores

Costco: Costco locations in Ontario are open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Walmart: Most locations in Ontario are open on Boxing Day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

A few Walmart stores in Ontario are on modified hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.

Metro: Most Metro grocery stores are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Boxing Day but some locations are closed, including:

  • 150 Churchill Blvd., Sault Ste. Marie

Food Basics: Most Food Basics grocery stores are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Boxing Day. However, the following stores are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

Wine Rack: In the Toronto area, all Wine Rack locations will be open on Boxing Day. However, only some stores in Ontario are open on Boxing Day.

Malls and shopping centres

Eaton Centre: Toronto Eaton Centre is open on Boxing Day from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Yorkdale: This mall is open on December 26 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sherway Gardens: The mall is open between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. but individual retailer hours may vary.

Rideau Centre: Ottawa's Rideau Centre is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Square One: You can shop at Square One in Missisage from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Bramalea City Centre: While Bramalea City Centre in Brampton is open on Boxing Day between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., store openings on stat holidays are voluntary.

Vaughan Mills: Modified hours.

Toronto Premium Outlets: Open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Outlet Collection at Niagara: Open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Lime Ridge: This mall in Hamilton is open between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mapleview Shopping Centre: This shopping centre in Burlington is open on modified hours.

Transit

TTC: Holiday service is operated on Boxing Day.

That means all TTC routes operate on Sunday service schedules but start earlier at around 6 a.m.

GO Transit: For Boxing Day, GO Transit is on a Saturday schedule and service runs on each route's Saturday schedule.

Not every GO Transit route offers weekend service so you need to check the specific schedule for your route to see if there's weekend service.

Services

Canada Post: Canada Post is closed on national and provincial holidays.

Boxing Day is a federal holiday and a provincial holiday in Ontario which means post offices won't be open and mail won't be collected or delivered.

Banks: Banks are closed on Boxing Day but you can still withdraw cash from ATMs and do online banking.

Service Canada: Locations are closed.

ServiceOntario: Locations are closed. However, some ServiceOntario services are online now so you can renew your driver's license, renew your license plates, renew your health card, and more.

Things to do

ROM: Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum is open on Boxing Day between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Canada's Wonderland: WinterFest at Canada's Wonderland is open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

National Art Gallery of Canada: This art gallery in Ottawa is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Distillery District: Distillery District restaurants, cafés, and retailers are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and The Distillery Winter Village outdoor shopping cabins and food vendors are open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Casa Loma: Christmas At The Castle is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Casa Loma.

Journey Behind The Falls: This Niagara Falls attraction is open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Cineplex: Open.

Art Gallery of Ontario: The art gallery in Toronto is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CN Tower: Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Boxing Day.

Rouge National Urban Park: This national park in Toronto — which borders Markham, Pickering and Uxbridge — is open 365 days a year.

Nathan Phillips Square skating rink: The skating ink at Nathan Phillips Square is open on Boxing Day for drop-in leisure skating between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.
