It's been just over one week since Joe Biden was projected to win the presidency, and now he has been given an official invite to visit Canada's capital.

NDP Member of Parliament Peter Julian introduced a motion in the House of Commons on November 16 to officially congratulate Biden and Kamala Harris on their election victory.

It also extended an invitation for both of them to visit Parliament at the safest opportunity, and for the president-elect to make an address.

Julian noted the "extraordinary relationship" between Canada and the United States while speaking in the House, and his motion was met with applause.

Speaker of the House Anthony Rota took a vote and there was no objection from any of the members present.

Previously, Justin Trudeau had extended his own personal message of congratulations to Biden and Harris, and spoke with the president-elect on the phone.

The last time Joe Biden visited Ottawa was in 2016 when he was still vice president under Barack Obama.

It is common for American presidents to deliver a speech in Parliament, with heads of state including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Bill Clinton having done so in the past.
