For what seems like forever, Kraft Dinner has claimed a spot among the most Canadian of dishes and was loved by so many people across the country. Or so we thought.
Several recent social media posts have suggested, however, that Canadians have fallen out of love with this classic dish and now there is a new favourite on the block. To get to the bottom of this, I tried KD vs PC White Cheddar Mac & Cheese and this is my honest opinion.
First some disclaimers:
- I prepared both options following the directions on the box exactly
- I eat my mac and cheese with a fork
- While I'm not against putting ketchup on it, I skipped the condiments for the purpose of this taste test
How does KD taste?
It seemed right to start with old reliable. The packaging on this one proudly displays that it's prepared in Canada.
The look is not really your traditional macaroni shape, it's more of a straight, skinny tube. The colour, as everyone knows, is a vibrant orange.
As for the taste, it's as vibrant as the colour. The cheese flavour is pretty bold but there was an almost artificial feel to it, despite the package promising that there were "no artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives."
How does PC White Cheddar Mac & Cheese taste?
This one is apparently a new go-to for many macaroni fans, so I had to put it to the test.
Appearance-wise, this one looks more like a traditional elbow pasta and the noodles were a bit more robust. The flavour, however, was not.
While KD has a distinct taste, the PC was very subtle. I could actually still get the flavour of the noodle coming through under the sauce.
The sauce itself was tasty with a definite cheesy undertone, and it felt healthier somehow, but I wish there was more of it.
Is PC White Cheddar Mac & Cheese better than KD?
It's tricky to choose a winner on this one. For people who like PC's pasta better, I can see where they are coming from. It is refreshing to try something different and this one seems healthier.
By no means am I an expert in this field, but based on the nutritional facts, these two are actually pretty much the same when it comes to calories, fat, protein, and other factors.
So given that it's not necessarily better for you, is it better overall?
In my honest opinion, I have to call this one a tie! PC is good and I can definitely see myself buying it again but I can say the exact same for KD too.
