Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and the largest lake in the world by surface area, earning it the nickname "Freshwater Sea," according to the Great Lakes Guide.
The vast body of water boasts rugged shorelines, sandy beaches, crystal waters and breathtaking coastal scenery, making it a gorgeous place to visit.
There's lots to enjoy along the lake's coastline, from scenic parks to unique towns and villages.
You can explore some of the area's communities, including Rossport, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.
Lake Superior Provincial Park is a majestic destination to visit. The park is home to cliffs, beaches, river valleys, cascading waterfalls, inland lakes and more, making it an adventurer's paradise.
Other gorgeous parks in the area include Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Pancake Bay Provincial Park and Pukaskwa National Park.
There are over 72 beaches that dot Lake Superior's American and Canadian shorelines. According to the Lake Superior Circle Tour map, more than 20 can be found in Ontario.
You can lounge on soft-sand shores, swim through crystal waters and relax in rocky coves at these spots. Some popular destinations include Pancake Bay and Batchawana Bay Beach.
Despite all its charm, Lake Superior also has a darker side. According to Ontario Parks, the lake has claimed "thousands of boats, ships and canoes," including the notorious Edmund Fitzgerald, earning it the nickname "The Graveyard of the Great Lakes."
With gorgeous beaches and coastal beauty, Lake Superior is a majestic destination to explore, but be sure to exercise caution while paddling its waters.
