This harbour town in Ontario is an underrated gem with sandy beaches and coastal charm

It's one of the province's oldest communities.

A heritage area in Ontario. Right: A beach in Ontario.

If crystal-clear waters, old-world charm, stunning landscapes and unique attractions sound like your idea of the perfect getaway, you may want to plan a trip to this quaint Ontario town.

In a post on Narcity Canada's Facebook page, we asked readers to share their most underrated vacation spot in Ontario. This beautiful harbour town was one of the recommended spots, and it's a dreamy hidden gem.

Penetanguishene is a charming destination perched along the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay.

According to Experience Simcoe, it's said to have "one of the most picturesque and protected harbours" and "is a haven for tourists, artists and outdoor enthusiasts."

From nature adventures to historic attractions, there's lots to enjoy while visiting the town.

You can learn all about the community's past at the Centennial Museum or step back in time at Discovery Harbour, a 19th-century British naval and military garrison.

Another spot that will sweep you away to a different era is Sainte-Marie among the Hurons — Ontario's first European Community.

The King's Wharf Theatre offers a range of performances and beautiful waterfront views, so it's worth planning a trip to this attraction as well.

Penetanguishene is known as the "Gateway to the 30,000 Islands" and offers a stunning entryway to some of Georgian Bay's picturesque landscapes. You can embark on boat cruises that take you across the shining waters, along scenic shorelines, and past lush islands in the region.

The town and its surroundings feature several beautiful beaches, such as Rotary Champlain Wendat Beach, where you can relax by the water and take a swim during the summer months.

Awenda Provincial Park, located just 10 minutes from Penetanguishene, has a number of beautiful natural beaches, with Methodist Point Bay being the sandiest.

Beyond its natural beauty, Penetanguishene has a vibrant downtown where you can find local galleries and boutiques brimming with unique goods.

With old-world buildings, beautiful scenery and shining waters, Penetanguishene is a magical spot to explore.
