All eyes are on our neighbours to the south today as they vote for their next president. As we anxiously await news, we began to wonder: what could a 2020 Trump win mean for Ontario?

Narcity spoke to several experts on what life in Ontario could be like if Trump sticks around for another four years.

Many of them spoke on uncertain trade relations, the response to COVID-19, and the repercussions for the climate.

What would another Trump win mean for Ontario's economy?

Dr. Stephen Williamson, a professor at the University of Western Ontario, says that another four years of Trump would mean "another four years of uncertainty in Ontario, with regards to trade policy."

"Trump has shown that he doesn't care to abide by any international agreements, and is willing to impose tariff restrictions for no obvious good reason," he continued.

Manufacturing specifically is one of Ontario's largest industries and is critical to the provincial economy.

"I think of Trump as being bad for economic policy," he said.

Williamson predicts that if Biden were to win, the USA would see a stimulus package within the next year, which would affect southwestern Ontario "indirectly through our trade links."

What would another Trump term mean for Ontario in terms of COVID-19?

Matthew Lebo, professor and political science department chair at the University of Western Ontario, spoke on the differences between the candidates' responses to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"If Biden wins and becomes president in January, there will be an increased federal response to COVID-19," said Lebo.

There will be greater international cooperation over finding and distributing a vaccine," he told us.

Dr. Williamson told Narcity that a Trump win would be bad for Ontario, particularly in the short-term, due to "poor response to COVID-19."

Whether the border between Canada and the United States opens depends largely on how America handles the pandemic, reports Forbes.

What would a Trump victory mean for climate change in Ontario?

Lebo told Narcity that if Biden were to be elected, "there would be a very different response to climate change."

If Trump were to win, it would be unlikely for the USA to rejoin the Paris Accord and invest in clean energy, the professor said. An investment in clean energy would be beneficial for auto-manufacturing in Southwestern Ontario, he added.

Adam Radwanski of The Globe and Mail wrote that "the climate-related peril for Canada if Mr. Trump is re-elected is certainly more obvious."
