One region of the GTA was at the top of the list in terms of new COVID-19 infections over the long weekend.

York Region reported nearly as many cases as Ottawa over the last three days.

York's numbers were not too far below Toronto and Peel, at 89 on October 10, 69 on October 11, and 43 on October 12.

New cases in York Region this long weekend

Ottawa, meanwhile, reported 267 cases total for the long weekend — 94 on Saturday, 54 on Sunday, and 119 on Monday.

York Region wasn't included in the stage 2 closures announced by the province on Friday.

Indoor dining, gyms, and many other establishments have been mandated to close in Toronto, Peel, and Ottawa for a minimum of 28 days.

York Region also wasn't initially included in the gathering restrictions announced in September, which had Markham's mayor "disappointed and concerned."

"Over the past two weeks, York Region is experiencing increasing numbers of daily COVID-19 cases," York Region said in a statement on October 9.

The letter warns that if residents don't follow public health advice, York could soon have "similar provincial restrictions" as Toronto, Peel, and Ottawa.
