Following a scandal that resulted in the resignation of one government official, WE Charity is officially ending all of its operations in Canada.

The announcement was made on September 9 on the organization's website. The founders of the charity, Craig and Mark Kielburger, also provided more details in an interview with CTV News.

The simple math is now the charity is spending more than it’s bringing in.

There will be no more WE Day events held in the future, and the Kielburgers will be stepping down from their positions once the closing of operations in Canada is finalized.

This also means that all of the organization's Canadian staff will be laid off.

WE Charity became the centre of a political scandal when they were chosen to run the now-abandoned Canada Student Services Grant.

Critics of the decision cited the relationship between the organization and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's family members.

Former Finance Minister Bill Morneau left his position amid news of his own ties to the charity.
