Just a short drive from the city, you can visit a charming village that's straight out of your favourite Hallmark movie, with quaint streets and an enchanting riverside setting that comes alive in the fall.
Just 25 minutes from Ottawa, Wakefield is a picturesque village located in the Outaouais region of Quebec.
The village is sure to charm visitors with its rich heritage, historic sites, many cafes, boutiques, art galleries, bakeries and restaurants, and its beautiful location on the Gatineau River.
One of the first villages to be established along the river, Wakefield was founded in 1830 and is today best known for its eclectic and lively arts scene.
You can explore the many galleries and lively festivals that make Wakefield so unique, or take a step back in time by visiting one of its many historical sites.
Start your exploration of the village with a stroll down Riverside Road. The town's main commercial strip, Riverside, is where you'll find many shops, restaurants, galleries and historic churches, as well as pleasant views of the Gatineau River.
For restaurants, check out Café Le Hibou, an eclectic spot serving up butter chicken poutine, sushi bowls, Ribeye steak, and more in a beautiful location, or head to the Nikosi Bistro Pub for pub fare with a twist.

For a bit of adventure, Eco-Odyssee Nature Park offers a water labyrinth of over 60 intersections that can be explored by canoe, kayak, pedal boat or stand-up paddleboard, and is open on weekends until mid-October.
Other outdoor activities you can enjoy here include golfing at the Edelweiss Golf & Country Club and horseback riding at Captiva Ranch, the largest horseback riding farm in Eastern Canada.
The famous Wakefield covered bridge is a must-see while visiting the village. The bridge crosses the scenic river and is especially beautiful in the fall, when it's surrounded by golden leaves.
Covered bridges are also known as "kissing bridges," so it's the perfect spot to visit with a loved one.
If you cross the Gatineau River on the covered bridge, you'll come to the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre. The 160-year-old farmhouse is a trip back in time and also hosts public activities, including nature hikes, art classes, and historical exhibitions.
Another charming spot in the village is the Wakefield Mill. Built in 1838, the Mill is surrounded by beautiful scenery and the rushing waters of MacLaren Falls. It's now the home of the Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa, which also houses a gourmet restaurant.
While you're here, don't miss the Wakefield Market, which brings together local vendors offering fresh produce, high-quality meats, artisanal foods, and handcrafted goods.
Every Saturday until mid-October, visitors can enjoy live music and special events at the market celebrating the region's unique flavours.
