A Virgin Mary Statue Was Decapitated In Toronto (PHOTOS) - UPDATED

A Toronto parish reported over the weekend that their Virgin Mary statue had been decapitated. Worse still, they confirmed the figure's head is actually still missing.

Our Lady of Lebanon Parish, located on Queen Street West, confirmed via Twitter on August 30 that their church had been vandalized.

The images of the headless sculpture were posted to social media on Sunday.

At the moment, the vandal’s motive remains unclear. However, Father Walid El Khoury, the pastor of the parish, stated in a Facebook post that the head has yet to be found.

The leader of the congregation also revealed that Toronto police have launched an investigation into the incident.

“Sunday, August 30, 2020, before we started our Masses at Our Lady of Lebanon church Toronto, we were shocked to discover a horrible act of vandalism," wrote Our Lady of Lebanon Parish on Sunday. 

"We found that the statue of the Virgin Mary, erected in front of the church, was completely decapitated.”

“Our parishioners, when exiting the church, were horrified to see such a deplorable and malicious act,” they added.

The church noted that they would be reviewing the parish’s security cameras, in the hopes of identifying a culprit.

According to CP24, a man, who appeared to be carrying something, was spotted on the church’s lawn around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 30.

“Thank you all, dear parishioners and friends, for your calls, emails, and messages, in which you express your concerns and deplore this ugly act,” their statement concludes.

Toronto has been no stranger to acts of vandalism this year.

The statue of Egerton Ryerson at Ryerson University was doused with pink paint back in July, in an attempt to draw attention to the historical figure's controversial past. 

The Virgin Mary statue isn't the only figure to have lost its head in Canada this weekend.

In Montreal, a monument commemorating John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister, was toppled during a protest.

As it fell, its head came flying off.
