Prince Edward County Has New Fines & Fees For Out-Of-Towners To Slash Crowds This Summer
Parking fines are increasing from $35 to $400 in some spots.
If you're hoping to plan a getaway to Prince Edward County this summer, proceed with caution. The popular Ontario destination is implementing new fees for out-of-town visitors and upping fines for breaking the rules.
These measures are being put in place to curb overcrowding and traffic jams in the region, as well as illegal parking and camping, which became an issue last summer amid the pandemic, PEC's Director of Community Services, Programs and Initiatives Todd Davis said to CTV News.
On May 25, the mayor and Members of Council released a report about updated fees and by-laws for 2021, which says that out-of-town visitors will now have to pay $10 for weekend access to various spots including Wellington Beach, and an additional $10 for vehicles with trailers. Local residents will still get free access.
The fine for illegal camping has been bumped up to $500 from the original $75 ticket, and visitors to popular destinations like Sandbanks Provincial Park will also face a $400 fine for parking illegally. Davis said that the previous $35 fine was not enough to keep people from breaking the rules. These restrictions will remain in place until the end of October.
PEC is one of many regions around Ontario implementing new rules and fines for visitors at their beaches this summer.
