If you had a walk or picnic planned this afternoon, you may want to rain check. Environment Canada has issued special weather statements throughout the GTA including Toronto, Peel, Halton, and York Region and other regions around southern Ontario.

The weather alerts in the GTA call for isolated thunderstorms that will travel across the regions throughout the afternoon, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour and local rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 millimetres falling "in an hour or less."

Drivers should use extra caution as there could suddenly be very low visibility while driving on the roads, says Environment Canada. Poorly drained areas of highways can lead to difficult driving conditions as a result of the intense downpours.

The treacherous weather is expected to end sometime this evening, so until then, it's best to stay vigilant and not stray too far from a safe place to hide from the elements.

This week has brought thunderstorm activity to other parts of Ontario as well, along with the risk of large hail.
