There are some little towns out there that feel like they've been made for a romance movie. Cute streets lined with quirky little shops, a small but tight-knit community, and beauty around every corner.

Ladysmith is one of those spots, named among the best small towns in Canada on a Narcity poll and absolutely bursting with charm.

The quaint town is nestled on Vancouver Island, which means that rugged wilderness is in your backyard here. We're talking thick rainforest with ancient trees, remote beaches that hold titles like 'the best in Canada' and scenic coastline that stretches out as far as the eye can see.

Ladysmith is tucked away in the Cowichan region of Vancouver Island, a beautiful array with lots of picturesque communities to check out. You can drive around here, stopping at the local farms, art galleries and parks.

While that and more is what awaits you on a weekend getaway from here, the town of Ladysmith has a ton going for it in its own right. It's a blend of laid-back coastal charm, vibrant creativity, and a dash of historic charm.

Even better, it's a spot known for its mild weather, calling for a visit any time of the year. According to the Ladysmith Tourism website, Ladysmith has a "Mediterranean-like climate," which "brings dry, sunny summers and mild winters."

Wander down the famous First Avenue here, and beautiful heritage buildings, cool shops and restaurants will surround you. It's hard not to fall in love with this town while strolling down this street, and it even won the national Great Street title in 2017.

Beantime Cafe is the spot to go for coffee fuel while you explore, Old Town Bakery is the place to go for a treat, and Neck of the Woods General Store is a fun spot in town to purchase local goodies.

The town is set along the water, giving you views of the southern Gulf Islands and making afternoon walks that much more scenic. Transfer Beach Park here is where to go for kayak rentals, stunning views, and even a maritime museum visit.

If you want to keep exploring, you can head to Holland Creek, which is nearby town, and escape into the vibrant green forest trails. Crystal Falls here is beautiful, and Heart Lake trail is as pretty as it sounds.

Just 20 minutes away is Jack Point and Biggs Park, where you'll find breathtaking sandstone bluffs.

If you want to see even more lively vibes after exploring Ladysmith, head to Duncan.

It's known as "the urban heart of Cowichan," has a year-round farmers' market that's incredible, and "one of the world’s most sizeable outdoor totem collections," according to the tourism website.

As fall comes breezing in, nothing beats days spent in a cozy seaside town.
