I explored this dreamy small town with endless beaches that ranked among Canada's 'prettiest'
It's a BC Ferries ride away!

A small town in BC ranked among the prettiest in Canada.
Living in B.C., there's no shortage of beauty. Around every turn, there's a new view that'll take your breath away — mountains, ocean, meadows, you name it.
There's something particularly magical about a small town, though. A charm that makes you feel cozy and warm, inviting you to wander around aimlessly all day and take it in.
I got to do just that, a few years ago, back when I called the province home and hopped on BC Ferries to explore as much as my PTO would allow.
One of those trips landed me in the famous little town of Tofino — a surfers' paradise, vacationers' dream come true, and my personal favourite getaway spot (Original? No, but justified nevertheless). This community tucked away on the west coast of Vancouver Island has accumulated many titles, from having Canada's best beaches to being ranked as a top vacation spot time and time again. But recently, it was also named among the prettiest small towns in Canada, on a Narcity poll.
I think that, very simply, sums up Tofino – pretty.
After three visits full of research and many daydreams about going again, here are my go-to recommendations if you, too, want to visit one of Canada's prettiest small towns.
Spend a day in town, getting a lay of the land
Yes, the nature here is what really makes this spot special (rainforests, white-sand beaches that go on as far as the eye can see, bright blue water, hot springs... you get it), but the town itself also needs your attention. It's perfectly small, set on the calm waterfront of the harbour, and bursting with creative local businesses.
The Saturday market is a great window into the community, where you can shop from artisans and creators and enjoy some live tunes.
Any day of the week, though, is a good one to go to Rhino Coffee House. It's the most popular coffee stop in town, but worth waiting in the oftentimes-long line that stretches out the door. Grab a donut, dip it in your latte, and get walking so you can go and explore more.
There are cute shops scattered around the streets, but a personal favourite of mine is Merge. There you'll find the vintage Levi cut-offs (distressed to perfection) that you've been hunting for, a smattering of local goods, and, of course, a cute vibe.
Food trucks and eateries are also all around, making it easy to grab a bite in between adventures. Toki Doki is my recommendation, conveniently located right by Tofino Brew Co., and Tofino Licks for a sweet treat after is always a good idea.
Save (a tad of) money and camp
Honestly, even campsites here are kind of expensive, but not as expensive as the hotels and arguably make for a more fun experience. Bella Pacifica Campground is where I've stayed twice, and there's a reason why I went back. You can set up camp right on the beautiful shore of Mackenzie Beach, meaning you'll fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to the ocean breeze.
If you want to save a little more, consider staying in Ucluelet, just 30 minutes down the road from Tofino. It's yet another pretty small town, with less tourism but equal beauty.
The beaches
Alright, now to the fun part — the beaches. This town is famous for being surrounded by sandy shorelines, flanked by thick rainforest and separated by dark jagged rocks along the coast. It's an incredibly beautiful mix of elements here that makes for a beach day like none other.
Take your pick of beaches, because you can't really go wrong. I rented a bike and peddled down to Long Beach (which is, as its name suggests, long), and it was one of the best afternoons here.
Cox Bay beach has a hiking trail that takes you to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the shore, and Chesterman Beach has soft sand to relax on with a book.
Obviously, you're in Tofino, so it's also time to brave the waves. There are a bunch of surf rental shops in town that you can grab a board or a lesson from and dive into the chilly swell. Teeth will be chattering, heart rates will be flying, but I almost guarantee that you'll also walk out of that water smiling ear-to-ear.
Explore the rainforest
A key part of my next-Tofino-trip-daydream? Rainforest walks.
I was so caught up in the Pacific Ocean charm and the Tacofino offerings that I never set aside the proper time to really explore the incredible rainforest here. It's home to ancient trees, vibrant greenery, and boardwalk trails that will make you feel like you've escaped any and all touristy crowds — completely immersed in nature.
My next time in Tofino, I need to fit in doing The Rainforest Trail and taking a tour out to Hot Springs Cove (this involves a 1.5-hour boat ride, but the payoff is hot pools along the ocean). Not to get greedy, but I also wouldn't mind spotting a whale or two on my next trip.
The longer you have here, the better, so try to fit in as much as possible — including my wish-list adventures that I haven't gotten to yet.
Take it from me, it's worth seeing every nook and cranny of this spot.
