The move gives America's Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency the go-ahead to work alongside local authorities as needed.
It applies to Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, where President-elect Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated on January 20.
The statement explains that federal assistance will be available to local services to “coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population [...]”
The purpose of such measures is to “save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the District of Columbia.”
It comes days after violent pro-Trump riots broke out in the U.S. and inside the Capitol building, following months of claims of voter fraud by Donald Trump.
After keeping silent for days, Melania Trump also spoke out on Monday. In a statement, she addressed the events in Washington and asked people to stop attacking her.
