The Alberta Meat Plant That Had Canada's Largest COVID-19 Outbreak Has Reported Another

Over 900 workers tested positive for COVID-19 during the original outbreak in the spring.

Alberta Health has reported a new COVID-19 outbreak at the Cargill meat-processing plant, the site of Canada's largest outbreak back in the spring. 

According to CBC News, the outbreak started in December and there have been 11 cases linked to the meat plant, seven of those remaining active as of Saturday, February 6.

946 Workers tested positive for COVID-19 during the last outbreak.

In May 2020, over 1,500 cases of COVID-19 were linked to the worksite. 

CTV News reports that a death occurred in connection to the original outbreak. He was a man in his 30s and his death was reported in January 2020. 

"At Cargill, the safety of our employees is our top priority. As essential workers, our team is on the frontlines of feeding people across our communities," said Daniel Sullivan, a spokesperson for Cargill, in an email to Narcity. 

"As the High River community continues to experience a rise in case count, six employees at our facility have recently tested positive for COVID-19. They are in isolation and receiving appropriate medical care and support. Our High River facility has 2,000 total employees," he continued. 

This outbreak joins a long list of current outbreaks in the Calgary Zone.
