Dan Levy’s Powerful Golden Globes Speech Calls For More Diversity In The Ceremony

Prepare to feel proud, Canada! Dan Levy’s Golden Globes speech called for more inclusion and diversity in the awards ceremony going forward, "because there is so much more to be celebrated."

On Sunday evening, during the 2021 Golden Globes, Toronto-born writer, director and actor Dan Levy accepted Schitt’s Creek’s award for Best Television Series.

The 37-year-old began by congratulating the show’s “amazing cast and crew,” most of whom he said were watching from their homes in Canada.

“We are so grateful to all of you for it," he added.

The multi-talented star also took a moment, like Catherine O’Hara did, to thank CBC for helping to make a totally Canadian TV show.

Levy then went on to call for more diversity overall in next year’s Golden Globe nominations and ceremony, noting that "inclusion can bring about growth and love to a community."

"I hope that this time next year, this ceremony reflects the true breadth and diversity of the film and television being made today, because there is so much more to be celebrated," he said.

The Toronto-based show beat out fellow nominees The Flight Attendant, The Great, Ted Lasso, and Emily in Paris.

Dan Levy, alongside Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy all received nominations for their Schitt’s Creek performances in their respective categories.

It’s not the first time the show has totally swept an awards ceremony, either.

Last year, it earned a record-breaking number of comedy awards at the Emmys, with Dan Levy delivering the most Canadian acceptance speech ever.
