When it comes to the Super Bowl, there’s arguably only one thing that’s as exciting as the sport itself; the commercials! In case you were busy on Sunday night, or if you were too preoccupied eating chilli at home to pay attention to the ads, these are some of the best Super Bowl commercials of 2021 — and they’re just as extra as you’d expect. Editor's Choice: Drake Made The Most Hilarious Appearance In A Super Bowl Commercial (VIDEO) Cadillac Released several hours before the game on Sunday, this ad for the all-electric Cadillac LYRIQ was a parody of the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands. It stars Winona Ryder, who reprises the role she played in the original film, alongside her son Edgar Scissorhands A.K.A. Timothée Chalamet. What’s not to love, eh? State Farm The Weeknd wasn’t the only Canadian to appear during the Super Bowl, as Toronto icon Drake showed up during one ad break, too. He appeared in a commercial for State Farm Insurance, alongside Paul Rudd and NFL stars Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. To give you an idea of just how celeb-filled this 30-second clip is — Drake is just a stand-in role! Cheetos If you like your commercials to be brimming with famous faces, this Cheetos ad might just be your favourite. It stars Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, who sing a cheese puff-inspired version of Shaggy’s “It wasn’t me.” The best part is that Shaggy actually makes a special appearance. Reddit What just happened? pic.twitter.com/DypRp6DeQt— Reddit (@reddit) February 8, 2021 If you blinked, you may have missed this five-second advert from Reddit. With a 30-second commercial spot reportedly costing $5.5 million, Reddit chose the most budget-friendly option and created a short-and-sweet ad for a fraction of the price. The idea was that those interested would pause the clip to read the text — which says “If you’re reading this, it means our bet paid off.” Toyota Perhaps the most inspiring ad shown on Sunday night, this one features American Paralympic swimmer Jessica Long. It shows her life journey from a Siberian orphan to a 13-time Paralympic gold medalist, and has the message that there is "hope and strength in all of us." Jeep While this clip perhaps wasn’t the most exciting of all the commercials on offer on Sunday evening, it was one of the few that included a very discreet political element. Featuring Bruce Springsteen, it acknowledges the “divide” in the United States right now, noting that “fear has never been the best of who we are...” While it’s an advertisement for Jeep, the clip also makes a case for why Americans “need the middle” right now. M&M's Yet another Canadian icon made an appearance, but this time it was Golden Globe-nominated Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy. It was a pretty wild weekend for the Toronto-born star, as he hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) for the first time the day before! Ford One of the more serious commercials shown during the 2021 Super Bowl, this one took a look at the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It includes the message “hold the line” and features clips of essential workers and frontline health care staff tackling the crisis. It ends with the hopeful note, “let’s finish strong” as it suggests there is light at the end of the tunnel. Uber Eats Mike Myers and Dana Carvey return as Wayne and Garth for this Wayne’s World comeback, which advertised UberEats. It was a pretty short clip — but it's sure to have appealed to fans of the 1990s duo. Bubly Sparkling Water Yep — it’s another Canadian! Starring in an advert for Bubly Sparkling Water, Michael Bublé tries to convince various water-drinkers that they’re saying his (and the drink’s) name wrong. It’s a fairly unsuccessful quest for the Canuck singer, but he does manage to introduce two new flavours. DoorDash Cute, colourful and good-to-go with a catchy tune, it’s hard not to love this Daveed Diggs and Sesame Street mashup. Advertising DoorDash, this ad dropped during the first quarter of the Super Bowl and promised to donate $1 for every order (up to $1 million) to child-focused social impact work. Of course, there were plenty more incredible commercials shown on Sunday night… but you’d need several hours and a whole new pot of chilli to enjoy them all again, right?!
