Metro Ranked Worst For Toxic Chemicals Out Of North America's Biggest Chains

The Ontario and Quebec-based grocery chain Metro has been ranked as one of North America's worst major retailers when it comes to keeping toxic chemicals out of their products and packaging.

According to the 2021 Retailer Report Card, Metro got 0/164 points — dead last on a list of 50 major chains — for policy, safety and transparency when it comes to toxic chemicals.

The list includes retailers like Amazon, Costco, Canadian Tire, and even Tim Hortons, but Metro, as well as its subsidiaries, including Food Basics and Drug Basics, was one of the few major retailers to not receive a single point.

"There is no indication that Metro has made any significant public-facing commitments to address the safety of chemicals used in the products it sells," the report states, "including any indirect food additives that may be in food contact materials.

Metro also received a failing grade in 2019 from Retailer Report Card, which outlines a number of steps the chain can take to improve. In an email to Narcity, Metro said they "were unaware of this report and therefore cannot comment," but that the company had "taken note and will be looking into it."
