On Boxing Day, the Pickering Markets announced on Facebook that they will be permanently closing their doors due to COVID-19.

The famous marketplace — which has been in business for nearly 50 years in Pickering — said the decision to close permanently was one they didn't make lightly.

"We feel for every single business that has or is currently going through these tough decisions," they said.

Pickering Markets announced the news on the same day that Pickering and all of Ontario entered a province-wide shutdown until mid-January.

"COVID-19 has taken its toll on so many small businesses and we were no exception to its cruel effects," they wrote.

Over 1,000 people had commented on the post less than a day after it was published, and over 8,000 people had shared the sad news.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, our vendors and our staff who have made The Pickering Markets a landmark attraction in Durham Region," the flea market wrote.

"Be safe, be happy, be positive."
