Toronto is a popular destination for day trips and weekend getaways, but there's another Ontario city that deserves some love. With old-world streets and European charm, it's a beautiful spot to explore.

In a post on Narcity Canada's Facebook page, we asked readers which Ontario cities are worth visiting instead of Toronto, and this quaint city was among the suggestions.

Kingston is a dreamy lakeside gem nestled along Lake Ontario. According to the City of Kingston, Europeans settled the area in the 17th century, and it even became Canada's First Capital in 1841, so you can expect to see tons of history here.

While it's smaller than Toronto, Kingston offers a charming, laid-back atmosphere, plenty to do, and an impressive food scene.

You can grab a coffee from one of the many charming cafes and wander through downtown, which is lined with historic shops and limestone buildings.

There are a range of attractions to enjoy, from cruises around the surrounding Thousand Islands region to trolley tours, outdoor movies and museums.

History enthusiasts can head to the Kingston Penitentiary and explore Fort Henry. Or, check out the hidden gem Martello Alley, where you'll find unique art pieces.

Kingston boasts an incredible culinary scene. You can sip drinks in old-world pubs, dig into farm-to-table meals and brunch by the water. During the warmer months, you can grab a gelato and stroll along the lake, soaking up the views.

If you're dreaming of a city getaway, locals say this historic destination is worth travelling to instead of Toronto.
