Sparkling lakes, winding rivers and stunning woodlands make this Ontario destination a true hidden gem. With breathtaking scenery and charming communities, it's a magical getaway, and locals say it's way better than expected.

We asked readers on Narcity Canada's Facebook page to share Ontario destinations that were way better than they thought they would be, and this picturesque region was one of the spots mentioned.

The Haliburton Highlands is nestled in the rugged wilderness of the Canadian Shield, about 2.5 hours from Toronto.

According to Destination Ontario, the region is "an outdoor wonderland of rivers, lakes and woodlands," making it an idyllic place for nature adventures.

One of the highlights of the area is Algonquin Provincial Park. This massive park is home to thousands of lakes, lush forests, and stunning trails. It's especially beautiful during the fall when the maple trees transform into brilliant shades of red and gold.

Another popular spot to visit in the Haliburton Highlands is the Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve, home to gorgeous trails and the world's longest canopy boardwalk.

There are several cozy villages dotted throughout the region that blend small-town charm with the beauty of rugged nature.

You can explore the communities of Haliburton, Minden, Dorset, and Kinmount, where you'll find a vibrant arts scene, charming cafes, and unique local shops.

Whether you're planning a cottage getaway, hiking adventure, canoeing expedition, or just wanting some time to unwind outdoors, this scenic destination has plenty to offer.
