Ontario has a secret island destination with quaint shops and crystal waters

It's a scenic hidden gem.

Lead Writer, Travel

You can enjoy an island getaway at this hidden gem in Ontario. Surrounded by sparkling waters, this destination has unique sites and charming communities.

St. Joseph Island, located in the channel between Lakes Huron and Superior, is a picturesque region spanning 140,000 acres.

It's home to two communities — Richards Landing and Hilton Beach. According to Algoma County, "both communities offer amenities like great restaurants, campgrounds, motels, full-service marinas and charming shops."

The island is known for its maple syrup, so spring is the perfect time for a visit. You can indulge in pancake breakfasts and tours of maple syrup facilities for an extra sweet experience.

You'll want to stop by Gilbertson's Maple Products for delicious pancake stacks and maple treats, or indulge in all-you-can-eat pancakes at the Maple Syrup Festival in April.

During the summer, you can paddle around the water and soak up some sun on Beech Beach.

The fall season transforms the island as the maple trees display stunning shades, while winter brings frosty views and opportunities for snowmobiling.

Some unique attractions on the island include the St. Joseph Island Museum, Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada and Richards Landing Lighthouse.

The island is accessible by bridge, making it convenient to visit without needing a boat.

This hidden gem is a magical spot to explore, so keep it in mind for your next getaway.
