No car needed!

Lead Writer, Travel

Dreaming of a little getaway? You don't have to go too far to experience lakeside charm, historic shops and European vibes. This Ontario city is like a little slice of overseas and it's just a train ride away from Toronto.

With endless boutiques, drool-worthy restarts and enchanting places to stay, it's an idyllic spot for a weekend adventure.

Kingston is a beautiful city situated on the shores of Lake Ontario. The destination is known as the "Limestone City" due to the many old-world buildings that give the area its charm.

It's just a 2.5 hour VIA Rail trip from Toronto, so you don't need a car in order to visit this spot. The train station is located outside of the downtown, so be prepared to call a ride-share service or taxi, or use public transit to get to the core.

During the winter months, Kingston transforms into a cozy slice of paradise. There are many snug cafes serving an abundance of drinks that will warm you to your core, as well as frosty streets filled with cute shops.

You can glide around the ice rink at picturesque Springer Market Square, catch a film at The Screening Room, check out a museum and more.

During the summer, the city boasts gorgeous sun-filled patios, ice cream shops and outdoor films.

There are lots of places to stay if you're looking for a longer getaway. From historic B&Bs to boutique hotels and quaint inns, Kingston has no shortage of spots to choose from.

It's also a great spot to visit if you're a foodie. There are endless restaurants dotted throughout the downtown where you can dig into a range of dishes.

If you're planning a staycation, you'll want to keep this beautiful city on your radar.
