Next year Tim Hortons is changing up their packaging for some food items and it will be completely recyclable.

They announced that paper-based wrappers for sandwiches and bagels will be replacing the current plastic-lined ones.

The products will be rolled out at locations across the country and that's expected to happen in January 2021.

460 tonnes plastic that will be eliminated over the next year

Tim Hortons is estimating that this move will eliminate plastic-lined wrappers and reduce about 460 tonnes of plastic over the next year.

Last week the chain promised to replace plastic straws with paper ones by early 2021 in all of their Canadian locations.

This comes after the federal government announced that plastic grocery bags, straws, stir sticks, plastic cutlery, six-pack rings and hard to recycle plastic takeout containers will be banned.

Tims already got rid of those stir sticks last year and compostable cutlery is being tested.

In September, Starbucks got rid of plastic straws for all iced drinks across Canada but you still get one with frappuccinos.
