The TTC Is Now Saying That Physical Distancing Will 'No Longer Be Possible' On Buses

"If you feel that a vehicle you are on is overcrowded, I would suggest getting off."

As Toronto's transit routes continue to see packed buses, customer service reps are now telling people that physical distancing on the TTC will "no longer be possible."

The statement came in response to a Twitter user's photo of a full bus in which passengers were standing shoulder to shoulder.

After asking how people are supposed to be distancing in this situation, the TTC responded that passengers should get off the bus.

As the city re-opens, social distancing will no longer be possible on our vehicles.

"If you feel that a vehicle you are on is overcrowded, I would suggest getting off and boarding the next one," the tweet continued.

TTC buses with overcrowding issues have been a common sight during the pandemic.

In the past, the transit agency has said that it would be taking additional measures to implement physical distancing and prevent overcrowding.

The TTC has also said that it has staff who are monitoring overcrowded routes and are deploying shuttle buses on those routes that need it the most.

TTC's Senior Communications Advisor, Stuart Green, states that the transport agency is "targeting additional scheduled and unscheduled service to the busiest routes (Keele, Dufferin, Jane, Finch, Lawrence, Markham Rd. etc)."

"Those routes are getting more service now than they had pre-pandemic."*

Yet, John Tory has called the tweet from the company "insensitive," according to CP24.

As the second wave of the pandemic continues, people are now being asked to use their discretion when boarding a vehicle that seems full.
