Suspicious sightings at various downtown parks in the city have prompted an investigation by Toronto Police Services.

Police told Narcity in an email that on January 30, they'd received a report that a man and woman were scattering tainted peanut shells at Victoria Memorial Square and Canoe Landing Park.

"At this time this is an active investigation," police said. They have taken samples of the shells for further testing and continue to patrol the area.

A post about the incident has also been shared widely on social media and various community Facebook groups, warning residents of the potential danger to pets.

The post claims that these two individuals have been seen doing this "in the past couple of months" because they "hate dogs."

Last month in Kingston, Ontario, pet owners were warned of various contaminated meat products discarded in the street, and that one dog died after eating an unknown substance.
